Gaelic Road Signs

Fàilte

Ainmean-Àite na h-Alba is the new national body for Gaelic place-names in Scotland. We are a partnership drawing on expertise from a number of nationally and internationally recognised organisations as well as local knowledge.

We determine authoritative forms of Gaelic place-names and street signs throughout Scotland for a variety of users.  Such information might be used by local authorities and other public bodies, mapping agencies and members of the public.  We also envisage that schools and other educational establishments having an interest in Gaelic place-names will use this information.

The purpose of Ainmean-Àite na h-Alba is to:
  • determine authoritative forms of Gaelic place-names across Scotland with reference to both research into historical forms and consolidation of current usage
  • apply consistent orthography of Gaelic in place-names
  • to encourage the adoption of these forms of Gaelic place-names
