Gaelic Road Signs

About Us

Ainmean-Àite na h-Alba (AÀA), also known as Gaelic Place-Names of Scotland, is a partnership organisation with members being drawn from the main authorities and users of Gaelic place-name information.  The partners are:

  • Argyll and Bute Council
  • Comhairle nan Eilean Siar
  • Comunn na Gàidhlig
  • Highlands and Islands Enterprise
  • Ordnance Survey
  • Scottish Place-Name Society
  • The Highland Council
  • The UHI Millennium Institute

The Chairman of the group is Dr Hugh Buchanan. Hugh is the External Relations Manager for Ordnance Survey.  The position of Vice Chairperson is held by Donald Morris of Comunn na Gàidhlig.

Although a small group, we are able to draw on considerable expertise in the field of place-names research and usage.  Recent projects have involved the establishment of Gaelic place-names for use on road signs, selected research of Ordnance Survey maps and the place-names on them and the setting up of a National Gaelic Place-Names Gazetteer.

A previous organisation formed in 2000, the Gaelic Names Liaison Committee, was instrumental in setting up AÀA and is now superseded by the new body.
