National Place-Names Gazetteer

News: 01/03/08

We are happy to announce that Bòrd na Gàidhlig have awarded £65,000 towards the technical solutions for the database and also place-names research.  This work will proceed as soon as is possible and establish the basis for future developments.

We are working towards the establishment of a National Gaelic Place-Names Gazetteer for Scotland.  This is a large project that will be completed in stages and be made available on this site.  We are working closely with the Scottish Place-Names Society and Sabhal Mòr Ostaig to coordinate this task.

Once available, the Gazetteer will provide definitive forms of Gaelic place-names which can be used by local authorities, the media, researchers and local communities.  We are making every effort to record historical information where possible and we hope that this will form an important part of the database.

The database will be created in stages with place-names being made available according to the intended use.  For example, we have already established many definitive forms of Gaelic place-names which are being used on local authority and trunk roads signs.
