Resources: Orthographic

We have published two papers related to Gaelic place-names and orthography.  They can be downloaded in PDF format by clicking in the links below.

The first publication sets out principles for the use of Gaelic in place-names.  This develops the guidance given in the Scottish Qualifications Authority's Gaelic Orthographic Conventions ("GOC") to cover more of the special cases that occur in place-names.  These principles have been developed in the course of work to review existing place-names.

The second publication gives specific guidance to those responsible for determining the Gaelic forms of street-names, chiefly where there are existing English language forms.  It includes suggested standard translations of the common English elements (such as Street, Avenue etc) that are used in English language street-names.
