Resources: Place-NamesAinmean-Àite na h-Alba has produced definitive lists of place-names in Gaelic for certain trunk roads in Scotland. These are the names that appear on trunk roads that currently have bilingual signs erected. The place-names are accepted by local authorities and the Ordnance Survey as the definitive Gaelic forms of each name. Each name was researched locally and nationally by contacting local sources and liaising with recognised authorities on Gaelic place-names. Please click on the following links to download PDF documents which show the English and Gaelic place-names for the relevant trunk road.
We are currently working on names for the A82 Tarbet to Inverness road and will complete the current planned set of roads with the A83 Tarbet to Kennacraig.
We are also working on place-names for The Highland Council. This is an ongoing process and relates to The Highland Council's policy of steadily replacing all place-name signs with bilingual versions.
All place-names will be added to the National Gazetteer of Gaelic Place-names.
