Gaelic Road Signs

Projects

Our current projects are varied, and relate to current priorities in terms of Gaelic place-names:

A82 Gaelic place-names research:
This project will establish definitive Gaelic forms for place-names that will appear on the bilingual signs planned for the route between Tarbet and Inverness.  Working with the data set of current signs, we are carrying out research into place-names with priority being given to those in the Lochaber area.  This project is being progressed with support from Transport Scotland and their agents Scotland Transerv.  All names will be added to the future National Gaelic Place-Names Gazetteer.  This site also contains names lists for other trunk roads where we have already completed similar research.

Highland Council place-names and signs:
The Highland Council policy of establishing signs in a bilingual form creates a need for research into the Gaelic forms of each name and element.  This project is being progressed on a needs basis progressing in stages.  All names will be added to the future National Gaelic Place-Names Gazetteer.

Other projects:
We also undertake other place-names projects from time to time where is there is a need to input and ensure continuity in the use of Gaelic place-names.
