About Us
AÀA is a partnership of organisations drawing on expert knowledge and a comprehensive set of skills specific to Gaelic place-names. As the national authority on Gaelic place-names we provide guidance to a wide variety of organisations for various purposes including bilingual road signs, Gaelic road signs, commercial signs, maps, presentation and research.
AÀA receives core funding from Bòrd na Gàidhlig with contributions from Highland and Argyll and Bute Councils. A full time project manager and researcher are employed, under the direction of a committee of representatives from the partner organisations:
Research: includes searching secondary and historical sources, consultation with local Gaelic speakers (where possible), scrutiny and verification of data by our panel of experts in linguistics and toponymy.
Translation: from English into Gaelic according to policies and principles.
Proofing and checking: verification of sources supplied and Gaelic orthography.
Bespoke research training and place-name information workshops in Gaelic, English or bilingual. Workshops can be tailored to suit primary and secondary schools, corporate and community groups.
